Hurricane Preparedness
Hurricane Season in Hawaii is June to November. Hurricanes can be dangerous killers. Learning hurricane warning messages and planning can reduce chances of injury.
BEFORE:
Plan an evacuation route inland. Ifa hurricane is imminent take your family in land at least 20-50 miles. For Puako and Wailea Bay this would be Waimea (Kamuela)

- Have disaster supplies on hand
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
- First Aid Kit and Manual
- Emergency food and water (2 quarts. of water per day per person, 3 days food)
- Nonelectric can opener
- Essential personal medications
- Cash and credit cards
- Sturdy shoes
- Personal hygiene items
- Charge all cell phones
During a Hurricane Watch
- Listen to the radio or TV for hurricane progress reports
- Acquire emergency supplies
- Fuel the car
- Bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture and grills
- Store drinking water in clean bathtubs, jugs, bottles, and cooking utensils
- Buy ice and a cooler if needed
- Review evacuation plan
During a Hurricane Warning
- Listen constantly to battery-operated radio or television for official, instructions on where to go for shelter and which shelters are open.
- Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors
- Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.
- Avoid open flames
- If power is lost, turn off major appliances to reduce power surge when electricity is restored
- Open the refrigerator door only when absolutely necessary and then only for brief moment.
If officials indicate an evacuation is necessary
- Leave as soon as possible
- Secure home by unplugging appliances and turning off electricity at the main shut off.
- Tell someone outside of the storm area where you are going
- Bring pre-assembled emergency supplies and warm protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
- Take blankets and sleeping bags to shelter
- Lock up home and leave
